Smokewisp got up with a stretch and began grooming himself for the day. We're running low on burdock root, and we could do with some horsetail too. I'd better go out as soon as... Then Smokewisp remembered. I HAVE AN APPRENTICE TO DO THAT FOR ME!! Smokewisp grinned then padded out to his apprentices nest, not far from his own little sleeping nook. "UP AND AT EM!!! WE GOT WORK TO DO AND THIS IS NO TIME FOR SLEEPING TIL NOON!!" Smokewisp screeched into his apprentices ear, "MOVE IT!!"

Subtlepaw screeched and almost clawed his mentor's ear before he realized who it was. Immediately deciding that Smokewisp was not a good cat to cross, Subtlepaw shook the bedding from his fur with a minimum of grumbling. "Let's go then," he growled, forcing his voice into an almost-normal tone. He stretched and crawled out of the den past his mentor, heading directly to the small fresh-kill pile.

Smokewisp rolled his eyes as the apprentice woke up screaming with shock and trotted out with him to the freshkill pile. He selected a crow and began explaining their schedule as they ate. "We're running low on burdock root, so you can go out and collect that. Some horsetail wouldn't hurt either, and anything else you find." Smokewisp took another bite of crow. "When you get back, I'll teach you how to treat fever. There's a feverish queen in the nursery now so we'll practice with her." Smokewisp wasn't very worried about the queens fever. It wasn't all that life threatening and it was normal for heavily pregnant queens. SMokewisp got up, finishing his crow. "Don't stray to far from camp, and just call me if you need any help." With that Smokewisp turned and padded back towards his den. The nettle pile was looking scruffy and unorganized.

Subtlepaw selected a sparrow for his breakfast and listened to his mentor speak. He didn't say anything in return, but he nodded when Smokewisp told him what to do. Carefully chewing his meal, Subtlepaw finished his sparrow and rose to his paws. He left camp, rolling his eyes. Lazy cat, he thought. Subtlepaw considered accidently-on-purpose collecting the wrong herbs, but his mentor would probably think he was an idiot. Sticking his head out of camp, Subtlepaw looked around and walked to the nearest patch of herbs he found. Tansy, he thought dismissively. He wandered farther into the forest, found some burdock root, and carefully dug out the roots. Hesitating, he decided to take this into camp right away, then come back out for more if he had to. Subtlepaw hurried back to the medicine den with his mouthful of herbs.

Smokewisp had just finished tidying up when Subtlepaw came back in. "Good," meowed Smokewisp, spotting the burdock root. He took it and placed it on the proper pile. "Now that that's done, we can treat that queen." Smokewisp grabbed a mouthful of feverfew and showed it to Subtlepaw. "This is feverfew. As its name suggests, it brings down fevers. You feed the cat the leaves, then make sure they rest. If their fever doesn't go down quickly, you can dose them with about 5 leaves a day, with meals. It can be found all over the forest, and is produced by a bush with flowers on it that look like daisies." Smokewisp showed Subtlepaw how to rip up the leaves so the juices seeped out, and wrap it in a large leaf to make it easier to carry. He gave Subtlepaw the package to carry and then led them into the nursery. He sat back and wrapped his tails around his paws, turning to the ill queen. "Subtlepaw will give you some herbs to bring down your fever now."

Subtlepaw walked up to the queen and sat down by her head. He concealed his slight nervousness with the ease of practice. Okay. Feed the queen the leaves and make sure she rests. Got it. Subtlepaw opened the big leaf that contained the feverfew, then lay it out before the queen. "This is feverfew," he informed her. He licked his paw and gently set it on the leaves so that he could pick them up. The herbs stuck to his paw, and he turned it over and held it out to the queen. "Lick this," he commanded gently. "Swallow it, and then I'll give you a bit more. I'll give you leaves until your fever has mostly subsided, then you can sleep off the rest." Subtlepaw watched as the queen ate the feverfew, then turned to his mentor as he gave her more. "Am I doing it okay?" he asked very quietly, so that the queen couldn't hear.

Smokewisp watched Subtlepaw carefully give the queen the herbs. He only betrayed his nervousness by asking him how he was doing. "You're doing fine," Smokewisp answered, "I think she has enough, for now," he meowed in a louder voice, "If she still has a fever, will give her more later." Smokewisp padded out of the den, flicking his tail for Subtlepaw to follow. "You did well, and you remembered not to show her how nervous you are. That is an important skill for later on when you are the clans only medicine cat. If a clan sees their medicine cat panicking, they will completely give up hope, and that's not helpful."

Subtlepaw nodded. "I know that," he meowed agreeably. Subtlepaw peered into the nursery for one last look at the queen, then quickly trotted to catch up to his mentor. "What should we do now?" he asked.

Smokewisp twitched his ears. Good question... He figured that they ought to do something..."How about some battle training? Even medicine cats need to know how to fight," meowed Smokewisp. He felt like battle training and it wasn't a bad idea.

"Okay," Subtlepaw agreed, hiding his feelings of slight disappointment. He wasn't a very good fighter. "Well, let's get going then," the apprentice meowed with forced cheerfulness.

Smokewisp nodded and led Subtlepaw out of camp. They soon reached a small clearing where they could train. "Alright," meowed Smokewisp turning to face Subtlepaw, "First, I'll show you some defensive moves." (btw I'm making this all up) Smokewisp ducked his head, and lashed out with his claws to suck the legs out from under some cat. He lept up and pretended to pin them down. "Now you try."

Subtlepaw nodded, feeling the uneasiness in his stomach make its first appearance in his expression. Choking down all signs of emotion, Subtlepaw ducked his head and clumsily lashed out with his claws. He jumped neatly onto his imaginary opponent and pretended to hold him down. Tcha, he thought angrily. Like I'll ever to be strong enough to hold a cat to the ground.

Smokewisp watched Subtlepaw perform the move carefully, and noted his clumsy movements. He looked nervous and didn't seem to believe in himself very much. "That was pretty good for a first try," meowed Smokewisp, "But that scratch was clumsy and not well thought out. Try moving faster. Here, I'll be the enemy cat." Smokewisp crouched in front of Subtlepaw with his tail lashing and waited for him to strike.

Hesitantly, Subtlepaw stepped forward to face his mentor. With a sudden surge of determination, the apprentice ducked his head and lashed out at his mentor with sheathed claws. Subtlepaw felt some of the blows land soundly, but the others felt weak. Rearing back and thrusting with his hind legs, Subtlepaw jumped on top of Smokewisp, feeling temporarily elated, before he slipped and landed at his mentor's paws. "I'm hopeless at this!" he yowled in frustration. "I always have been," the dejected apprentice continued bitterly. "All the other kits would push me around so much – why do you think I'm a medicine cat apprentice?" Subtlepaw demanded of his mentor, the fire returning to his voice.

Smokewisp blinked in surprise. He hadn't realized that Subtlepaw had such low self esteem when it came to fighting. "Well, if you think that you're hopeless, then you certainly will be," he meowed to Subtlepaw, "Just because you aren't as strong as others, doesn't mean that you can't be just as good a fighter. Before you can become as good as them though, you at least have to try. I won't make you keep battle training if you don't want to, but I hope you won't give up out of fear that you will fail." Smokewisp turned and quietly padded away. So Subtlepaw became a medicine cat because he didn't think he was strong enough to become a warrior. I'm certainly strong enough, so why did I?
